Basselinia eriostachys is an endemic clustery, sometimes solitary, understory to emergent, shrubby palm, largely distributed throughout Grande Terre in New Caledonia. Basselinia eriostachys occurs in humid forest and shrub land on schistose soils or ultramafic substrate from near sea level to 1,200 m asl. Basselinia eriostachys is a common and abundant species, largely distributed throughout the Grande Terre. It does not seem globally threatened. B.eriostachys is therefore considered as Least Concern (LC).

Basselinia eriostachys is an endemic palm tree, largely distributed throughout Grande Terre in New Caledonia.

Population


Population size is not precisely known but Basselinia eriostachys is one of the most widespread palms in New Caledonia and field surveys report dense populations per station.

Habitat


Basselinia eriostachys occurs in humid forests on soils derived from schistose or ultramafic rocks throughout New Caledonia from near sea level to 1,200 m asl.

Threats


B.eriostachys does not appear threatened even though some subpopulations may be impacted by fire, rats and wild pigs.

Conservation


Basselinia eriostachys is protected by legislation in Province Nord and it occurs in two protected areas : Parc des Grandes Fougères, Parc de la Rivière Bleue.
